This book is devoted to the oldest documents kept in the Latvian State Historical Archives that provide unique information about relations between Smolensk, on the one hand, and Riga, Gotland, and German towns, on the other hand, in the 13th – first half of the 14th century. The book contains a thorough research and collection of documents. On the basis of paleographic, diplomatic, textual, linguistic, and historical research, the authors revise historiographic versions of dating and attribution of archival documents, reconstruct their circulation within definite historical context, and reveal their importance for maintenance and development of relations between medieval Russia and Livonia. The research paper is supplemented by critical (in translation into Latvian) and diplomatic publication (in the language of origin – Old Russian) of the documents; the publication comprises detailed paleographic descriptions and textual comments. The book is published simultaneously in Latvian and Russian with summary in German.
