The Library of National Archives officially was established in 1987, but the real date of birth of the Library is 1919. The time from 1919 to 1987 the Library spent under the supervision of Latvian State Historical Archives. The most valuable part of this Library collection comes from the Library of Livonia Chivalry which was established in 1853.

In 1987 the collection of books of the Latvian State Historical Archives together with part of collection of books of the State Archive of Latvia were united and, under the name Special Library of Archives, became a very important information provider for Latvian System of Archives. At the beginning of 90-ties when Latvia regained the independence the Library again was restructured and the Library of Central Committee of Institute of History of Communist Party was added.

So the Library gives an interesting insight to the rich history of Latvia. Library has a collection of books, periodicals and directories on history (including local and family history), law, biography, genealogy, as well as a wide range of reference material.
